Flights from and to Toronto Area Airports

Each day, hundreds of flights from Toronto leave from regional and international airports.  Serving destinations that range from short-haul commuter flights to Caribbean and European vacation spots, chances are that you’ll find a Toronto airport to suit your schedule and budget.

There are three Ontario-based (and one U.S.-based) airports that offer flights to or from Toronto.  Lester B. Pearson International Airport is the area’s major hub, while Toronto City Centre Airport is conveniently placed a quick ferry ride away from the heart of the business and tourism districts.  Hamilton International Airport is located roughly an hour from Toronto, while Buffalo Niagara International Airport is a favorite of Canadians traveling to cities within the United States.

Choosing Your Flight from Toronto

So which of these Toronto airports should you consider?  Here is a quick list of the pros and cons of each:

  • Lester B. Pearson International Airport

Code:  YYZ

Carriers:  Many, including members of SkyTeam (Air France, Delta), Star Alliance (Air Canada, Asiana Airlines), and OneWorld (American Airlines, Cathay Pacific)

Location:  Mississauga, Ontario, approximately 20 minutes / 27 km to Toronto

Lodging Nearby:  Best Western, Novotel, Sandalwood Suites, Sheraton, Hilton, more

Travellers Liked:  This airport gets high marks for cleanliness, the number of destinations served, and being well-managed for such a large, busy facility.

Travellers Disliked:  Be prepared for long lines, long waits, and long walks.  It’s also more expensive to fly out of this airport than it is for others in the area.

  • Toronto City Airport

Code:  YTZ

Carrier:  Porter

Location:  Toronto Islands, city of Toronto

Lodging Nearby:  Delta Chelsea, Courtyard by Marriott, Hyatt Regency, Best Western, more

Travellers Liked:  This small, regional airport was commended for its friendly service, quick lines, convenience to the city, and classy lounge.

Travellers Disliked:  The baggage claim area is small for the amount of use it gets; with only one airline, destination options are very limited.

  • Hamilton International Airport

Code:  YHM

Carriers:  WestJet, Fly Central Europe, Hola Sun

Location: Hamilton, Ontario; 1 hour / 90 km to Toronto

Lodging Nearby:  Sheraton, Crowne Plaza, Comfort Inn, Howard Johnson

Travellers Liked:  This smaller airport is conveniently designed, cutting down on long walks and endless lines.  Service is generally friendly.

Travellers Disliked: There are limited public transportation options and amenities (such as restaurants).  Because of the short runway, planes queuing for departure can be time-consuming.

  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport

Code:  BUF

Carriers:  Continental, Delta, US Airways, United, American, AirTran, JetBlue, Southwest

Location:  Cheektowaga, New York (GPS: Buffalo, New York) 1.5 – 2 hours / 170 km to Toronto

Lodging Nearby:  Millennium Airport Hotel, Hyatt Regency, Hampton Inn and Suites, Holiday Inn Express

Travellers Liked:  This is a well-designed airport, spacious without being mammoth.  Lines move quickly, and parking is considerably cheaper, as are many flights.  In fact, you can find great savings on ticket prices, especially to U.S. destinations.

Travellers Disliked:  As a smaller airport, there are limited choices of restaurants and other amenities.

When choosing your Toronto airport, think beyond the biggest name in the region.  While Pearson offers unparalleled options for destination, its prices can be prohibitive.  Checking out a smaller airport can give you the best price for your flight from Toronto.
